FODMAPPED for you! Review | Now Available in The UK

I began my Low FODMAP lifestyle 4 years ago. I say ‘lifestyle’ as I still use the Low FODMAP diet as a base for my meal times. When I first started the diet there were virtually no recipes or information on low FODMAP. Fast forward to now and the low FODMAP diet has come a long way. More research has been done on what can and can’t be eaten on the diet. We now know that some some people can tolerate more of some foods than others. We also have an array of apps, cook books and blogs dedicated to helping low FODMAP newbies start their journeys to an IBS free life.

That being said, wouldn’t it be great if you didn’t have to flick through all those cook books to find a recipe that requires you to go out and hunt for the ingredients. Or use an app every time you want to know if what you’re about to tuck into is safe or not? Who has time for all that?!

Well, lucky for those of us in the UK, we can now conveniently order ready-made low FODMAP meals that are healthy and delicious, thanks to a new company called FODMAP Easy Ltd.

Who are they?

A small family run business based in Cambridgeshire, England, FODMAP Easy Ltd. have made themselves a one stop shop for all us British Low FODMAPers looking for hassle free meals times. They are the one and only supplier of the food brand ‘FODMAPPED’ in the UK and deliver nationwide. They have a range of soups, stocks and simmer sauces to get your juices going and the good news is they are 100%:

  • Onion FreeLow FODMAP Logo
  • Garlic Free
  • Gluten Free

They are also certified with the Low FODMAP logo (see right) which means they have been independently lab tested by NATA.

Lucky for you readers, the folk over at FODMAP Easy have asked me to give an honest review of a selection of meals from their Low FODMAP meal ranges which will be available from November 2017 but you are able to pre-order before then. I was sent a selection of three meals to review:

The Review | Week 1 – Roasted Pumpkin + A Hint of Sage Soup

low fodmap pumpkin soupSo, this week I’ll be reviewing the Roasted Pumpkin Soup, as it’s the month of Halloween and I’m in need of something pumpkiny!

In terms of service my package arrived swiftly and on time. I removed the contents and was more than ready to get cooking, mostly because at that moment in time I was starving ;).

On the back of the packet it clearly states:

  • Low FODMAP
  • Gluten Free
  • 99% Fat Free
  • No Added MSG
  • No Garlic or Onion
  • Vegetarian
  • Vegan
  • No Added Artificial Colours, Flavours or Preservatives
  • Source of Fibre

Cooking

The serving size is 250g which is half the packet, that proved just enough as I found it quite filling.

As I poured it into my bowl the consistency was a little jelly-like but it didn’t put me off as I thought if I heat it up it will become smoother and I was right. As I took it out the microwave it was smooth, steamy and smelt fresh and herby… yum!

It’s ‘souper’ (love a good pun, lol) quick to cook up. You can either warm it up in the microwave for 1min 30sec, which is what I did. Alternatively you can heat it up on the stove over a medium to high heat.

Taste

The overall taste was slightly sweet from the pumpkin and I could defiantly taste the sage, which gave it a fresh flavour. However I felt like it need a little something so I added a some fresh coriander, some ground black pepper and a nib of butter. With some ‘free from’ food ranges out there, I find they can leave a terrible after-taste in the mouth, with this soup I experienced none of that lingering bitterness. It was hearty and perfect for those on the go who have little time to cook an entire low FODMAP meal everyday. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was happily satisfied until dinner time.

Conclusion

For those with bigger appetites you’d do well to add some chunky vegetables and maybe some gluten free pasta to bulk it up a bit. I think it would work better as a base to a sauce rather than just a soup, as it works out to be quite expensive at £6.75 for 500g. If you were to stock up on these for mid week meals it could work out a little steep. I think it’s good to have on hand if you were hosting a dinner party and you wanted to cook a dish with garlic and onion etc. for everyone else, but you want to join in the fun with minimal effort and quality grub, then this is a good alternative. That being said sometimes we deserve to spend a little extra for convince rather than time spent wondering around the supermarket hunting for things to eat ;)
