Treating Cold & Flu Symptoms With A Digestive Illness

pgcoldfluIf you haven’t read my post on Over The Counter Cold Medicine To Avoid, When Living With IBS, you may want to read why some conventional medication is a no go area for those suffering with IBS or sensitive guts.

Here are my tips and tricks for treat those seasonal coughs and colds without medicine and without the digestive flare ups.

Water

It’s at the top of the list because it’s the most important. Staying hydrated will not only prevent your body from stealing water from your bowel in order to repair other parts of the body effected by ‘said’ virus, it will also help to flush the virus and any bad bacteria from your system. 3 litters a day is sufficient when sick.

Tea

TeaTea is great at fixing you up. Thyme works wonders on soothing colds and sore throats and clears the lungs faster. Try 2 tsp of fresh thyme in hot water and let steep for 5 min. Alternatively if you don’t like the taste of Thyme, run a hot bath and add 1/4 cup of fresh thyme and 1 cup of while milk, and steam out you cold while inhaling the aromatic benefits of the herb.

Another great home-made tea I swear by is Cayanne & Lemon tea. Cayanne pepper contains capsaicin which relives pain temporarily, the same way lemsip and paracetamol work. The lemon works by reducing mucus and killing bacteria. Great for a sore throat,

What you will need

  • 1/2 teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Lemon juice
  • 1 cup of boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar (optional)

Rest

Out of all of my points on this post, this is the one that will heal you the fastest. Your body needs time to recover and the most efficient way of it doing that is resting. Remember your health is important don’t push yourself more than you have to.
