Taking a break from serotonin

Taking A Break From Serotonin

Taking a break from serotonin

By looking at the title you may be thinking, ‘Um, how is that even possible and why would you choose to do that anyway?’, well the quick answer is over the past 2 weeks I’ve been unable to get a hold of my Resolor (Prucalopride); If you don’t know what it is take a look at my other blog post Resolor (Prucalopride) Initial Review.

In short it is targeted towards women who suffer with chronic constipation, however it basically puts my whole body into working order, and I feel great on it, I suffer no side effects or symptoms of taking the drug, I just feel balanced. It’s almost like the missing piece of the jigsaw. Although, like I mentioned above, I have been unable to get a hold of it for 2 weeks and I’m suffering mentally and physically. Below I have listed the symptoms I have developed over the course of 2 weeks and wanted to share them with you.

  • Constipation
  • weight gain
  • Outbursts of anger
  • Depression
  • Sugar cravings

Now, I follow a low FODMAP diet to help with my IBS which still helps, however nothing is moving down the plumbing, as so to speak, to the exit, in order for me to feel the need, to go to the toilet. I’m not bloated but when I eat the smallest meal I feel like I’ve eaten a buffet for 2, not pleasant. Resolor helps the bowel creates wave-like motions (peristalsis) to help food move through the colon in a timely manner, which in turn keeps everything working smoothly.

I think the hardest thing for me to except is that I have been taking Resolor for 1 year now and I would like to get pregnant next year, however I couldn’t imagine living with the symptoms above and be pregnant at the same time; I’ll keep you posted in that department.

Weight has also been a huge problem. Since a child I have suffered with trying to be the perfect weight and obsessed over the scales and up until 2 weeks ago I had happily accepted my balanced weight of about 43-44kg. However during these past 2 weeks I have crept up the scales. At first I thought, maybe it was my diet; It was my hubby’s birthday and our 10 year anniversary of being together, so I decided to cut back and keep doing my exercises everyday. I love Ballet which I found keeps me trim and toned but now I have lost my definition. Now I’ve reached 45.5kg and this is the heaviest I’ve been in a year. I drink a minimum of 2 litres of water a day and keep my calorie intake to about 1000 calories a day. I don’t think it’s helped by my body’s craving for sugary foods, it knows that if I eat sugar I get a boost of serotonin but it never lasts so I try to avoid the urge.

My mood is another big factor of coming off Resolor, I wake up depressed, I have trouble sleeping and I’ve become quite impulsive. Even though I try to think positively it doesn’t always work.

I really wanted to share this experience with you guys and if you notice similar symptoms like me it may be due to low serotonin levels. Luckily I’m able to get a hold of my Resolor next week and I’ll be back on track I keep you posted and up to date.

Much Love

Kate
